For decades, Old Monkey and I have puzzled over the essential nature of desire for certainty and control, and where it origi- Page 23 nates. Why do we strive to structure institutions as though they were predictable, controllable machines, and labor to make people behave as though they were predictable cogs and wheels? It led to a fascinating question. What would it be like if one had perfect ability to command and control? The earth, each blade of grass, each tree, the man, the tractor, the stormeach a whole of parts and a part of wholes, acting on and acted upon. Everything both infinitely understandable and infinitely mysterious, including an old man sitting on a tractor, smiling and running a hand over stubble on a crooked jaw.
